PERSONALITY
- OUTGOING & GREGARIOUS. sableheart is certainly not a shrinking violet. he loves making friends, and he loves talking to fellow cats - and as a result, it's very likely most in his clan know him pretty well. he's beloved for his friendly nature and his acts of companionship. he's especially drawn to shy cats, to whom he approaches and tries his best to draw them out of their shells. he doesn't always succeed, but the effort is appreciated, and it's very clear that he cares for all his clanmates. he's outwardly warm and expressive of it, and he reeks of a kind of positivity that he pushes onto each and every one of the stormclanners. of course, this also applies to cats outside of his clan; he has no issues with any of them, and he will speak to leaders and other medicine cats like as if they're his old friends.
- ALTRUISTIC. he's very much a cat who doesn't too much for himself. despite the fact that he may appear self-serving, at first, he's very much not. he looks after everyone as much as he can, and it's sometimes to the extent that he puts them before his own needs. he has neglected himself and his duties before for the sake of cheering a sad cat up or attempting to comfort a queen who's just lost her kits. he's kind-hearted down to his roots, wanting the best for all cats. this applies especially to stormclan, but it's not exclusive to them; he'll do the same if he notices anything is off with fellow medicine cats or warriors from other clans. he's also always the first to suggest if they find a wayward apprentice on their territory to help take care of the apprentice at least until they're capable of making their way back to their own clan.
- PLAYFUL. always a jokester, sableheart is the kind to try to cheer others up with self-depreciation (humor, of course) and lame puns. he's also quickest to playfight even in his age, which rivals that of a senior warrior. he hasn't let go of the kit in him and makes sure to bring the kit in other cats out of them, too. because of his playful, relaxed state, it's very easy to get along with him. his sense of humor is never aggressive in nature, and always in the spirit of making the other cat laugh or smile. that doesn't mean he doesn't find it funny when other cats get pouty or annoyed, but it's not the intended goal of his smiles and relaxed, even languid posture. he gives off the air of someone who genuinely wants everyone to be happy, and it makes it easier to get sucked into his infectious good moods.
- FLIRTATIOUS. a trait developed over moons of the thought "wouldn't it be funny if a medicine cat, who can't have a mate, flirted with everyone?" amusing the heck out of him. he developed it at first as a sort of social experiment, to see how other cats reacted; and generally, as long as they knew he wasn't being serious, they were amused by his antics. now, it's become a habit, and sometimes he flirts with other cats without even realizing he's doing it. he lays off of cats who are in their apprentice moons, but otherwise everyone is fair game. most in stormclan recognize by now that this isn't an attempt to get a mate, as he's rather out about being asexual and not interested in it regardless of his position, but on occasion he does still catch cats by surprise, in which case he quickly reassures said cat that he's only doing it for fun.
- AWKWARD. one of the central problems of sableheart is he doesn't know how to take a situation seriously. it's not because he doesn't want to, but rather that he finds humor easier to fall back on. as a result, when he knows humor won't work, he becomes a little awkward and shuffling about, trying to grapple for the right words to say. he's a fantastic listener, but he's not the best at giving advice that isn't medical (and even then, he always puts a light spin on it regardless, failing to put in the actual importance of that advice). he is not irritated by situations; it's rather that he doesn't know how to properly handle them. he's growing better at this with age, and certainly as a result of the charge he needed to take during berryfoot's illness, but it's still a matter that he struggles with to this day.
- NON-CONFRONTATIONAL & CONFLICT-ADVERSE. a central trait of sableheart's that worried berryfoot during his apprenticehood. he's not all that assertive, not because he has low self esteem but because he doesn't like being mean to other cats, or the potential that he may be. a soft heart he is, unable to join in a yowling contest. it's a trait of his that whitefoot, his sister, can easily take advantage of. he's always been like this, rather than it being a "medicine cat" trait of his. he doesn't like taking sides within a conflict, either, or being expected to be counted on for wisdom. it's a lot of pressure on his shoulders, and he worries about disappointing his clanmates enough that it can give him pause. while he is working on this, there will probably never be any point in which he's fully comfortable in a situation that can give rise to conflict.
- DEDICATED. despite the initial impression he doesn't take his job seriously, sableheart is in fact incredibly dedicated to his work. he stresses the importance of being a medicine cat, and he isn't a slacker - when push comes to shove, he'll do what he needs to do. he also makes certain that before he relaxes that he has all of his herbs in ready order and that he knows what he wants to tackle for the day. he doesn't put socializing with other cats over his job, which he focuses in on with abandon. it's to the point that he might even ignore oakwhisker if the tom is trying to talk to him while he's busy organizing his stash. he's also someone who doesn't give up if he knows that his contribution can help within a situation.
- BUSY-BEE. sableheart likes having things to do or cats to talk to. he grows bored very easily without some kind of stimulation for his mouth or paws, and thus often busies himself, if not with medicine cat duties than with the occupations of others, addressing their problems with cheery smiles. it can be a little off putting to those who need someone who'll just be quiet. he grows anxious when he has to sit still for a long time, and he has to hide a yawn at gatherings. he's not a very introverted or introspective cat, so as a result his thoughts can't occupy him for very long, his mind often going blank if there's nothing for him to focus on. he sometimes makes up jobs for him to do and even attempts to hunt if he feels like he's done everything else, even if it's not technically his duty.
- WELL-MEANING. this medicine cat loves everyone, truly. everything he does is with good intentions, even hard decisions made. he always does what he can to take the best route possible. he speaks and moves with his heart, primarily above everything else, which can lead to him making some particularly hasty decisions that might come across as unsavory. let it be known that he does not pick this solution because it'll be most convenient for him; he picks it because he feels it's the right thing to do. while his rules are more lax than that of other cats', due to his being a medicine cat, stormclan always comes first and he follows the warrior code to a tee. the only exception to this is when he feels there's no way of keeping to it without someone getting hurt in the process.
- SPIRITUAL. the trait of his that got him picked as a medicine cat apprentice. ever since he was little, he's been particularly close to starclan. he dreams about them, he reveres them, he talks tales about them. he dreams very frequently of them, although usually it's a simple sharing tongues with his ex-mentor. he's very much a devout, and if someone calls into question starclan's existence, he takes personal slight at it. if someone tried to convince him that starclan doesn't exist, he'd scoff. he's met them personally and that's all the proof he needs. he also tries to live up to their expectations of him as medicine cat apprentice, and it's why he's so hard-working, because he wants starclan to feel justified in their choice. he loves them all, even if he does know that they can't do much to directly help the clan. he thinks that their guidance is enough.
HISTORY
- Salmonclaw and Darkwing had a tumultuous relationship, to say the very least. Before Sableheart's birth, the two of them argued and fought more than they curled up in a den together, more so representing the Clan's name than anycat else within the Clan. Despite this, the two of them did end up having kits together.
- The two kits, Sablekit and Whitekit, already had a bit of a dissonance between the two of them from the moment the two of them could process that the other existed. Whitekit was very domineering right from the get-go and unpleasant to be around, while Sablekit preferred to have fun and be social with his fellow kits. It also didn't help that Sablekit had a connection to StarClan that Whitekit did not foster.
- Sablekit, being isolated from both his parents who simply argued all the time and Whitekit who got mad at him every time he had a StarClan dream, was drawn to Oak-kit when he turned one moon, a younger tom who was a bit shyer. Sablekit was more dedicated to bringing the other tom out of his shell, and early on it kindled a close friendship resembling family members, Sablekit acting as a makeshift older brother.
- This bond only turned closer when Oak-kit wound up losing a sibling close to apprenticehood. Sablekit made it his duty to look after the other tom, while he grew increasingly outgoing and reached out to other cats within his own Clan as he grew older.
- Given that he recited dreams from StarClan, he was scouted by his mentor, Berryfoot, early on. The medicine cat was getting on in age and hadn't had an apprentice since she became a full-fledged medicine cat herself, to the point that the leader at the time had been getting impatient. After reassuring said leader that she was biding her time until StarClan gave her a sign, she went into waiting for a cat who seemed to have a close relationship with StarClan - lo and behold, Sablekit presented himself.
- Whitekit had been well aware her brother was being scouted and steamed over it. She was passive aggressive about it, which allowed Sablekit to avoid conflict with her.
- When he and Whitekit became Sablepaw and Whitepaw, he went fully underneath Berryfoot's wing. If anything, this allowed him to remain close to his then-adopted brother, Oak-kit, as he still remained within the nursery for a moon, only a few fox-lengths away from his own den. Oak-kit made repeated visits to the medicine den, and the two of them continued to play and chat like they had when they were kits. Berryfoot was generally approving of this friendship, so long as it didn't blossom into anything more than a familial bond.
- The time slipped by for the two of them to hang out when Oak-kit became Oakpaw, but they still made time whenever they could. Sablepaw would chat about his lessons and Oakpaw his own. Each cat feigned interest in the other tom's, because he cared enough not to say that he kind of found the other's pursuits boring or pointless.
- Apprenticehood went off generally without a hitch, and thus Oakpaw became Oakwhisker on his twelfth moon. Sablepaw, of course, congratulated him. Oakwhisker asked when Sablepaw would get his own full name, and Berryfoot responded to tell him that it would be when Sablepaw was ready and had learned all that she could teach him.
- For Sablepaw, he really only had two problems during his being a medicine cat apprentice. One of them was the fact that his sister was still jealous of him, especially for obtaining such a prestigious and important role, and Whitepaw made it clear that she really, really didn't like him. She tried to stir him up into an argument, but Sablepaw being the more jokey, light-hearted of the two siblings did whatever he could to avoid potential conflict, as was the norm for him.
- Another problem was the fact that Sablepaw was quickly finding he was terrible at giving bad news or being strict to other cats. He picked up on his lessons just fine, but when he was supposed to give medical advice, Berryfoot felt he wasn't taking it seriously enough. While she was endlessly patient and kind, she worried over Sablepaw's ability to assert himself, as sometimes medicine cats would have to take hard calls in certain cases. Sablepaw seemed more interested in being friends with everyone as well as busying himself with gathering herbs and identifying them than learning that his role sometimes required him to overrule even the leader.
- As a result, despite the fact that he'd learned pretty much everything else, he still kept his apprentice name well past when Oakwhisker got his own warrior name. It was a bit of a source of frustration between the two medicine cats, but Oakwhisker remained his supportive ear during this time.
- Unfortunately, then-Whitefoot was not so kind, and often tried to persuade Berryfoot into allowing her to be the medicine cat apprentice. Berryfoot was not dissuaded from her choice; she believed that Sablepaw was the right one and just needed a push in the right direction. Informing Whitefoot of this only made the she-cat angrier at her brother.
- As the moons spanned onward, Sablepaw still went for some time without his full name. That was about to change as of twenty-two moons ago, when Sablepaw reached the age thirty-three. A border spat between AmberClan and StormClan occurs, and Sablepaw is forced to take charge when his mentor falls ill and he needs to help the cats in need. What sets the gravity of the situation fully into the tom is the passing of their deputy, which he blames himself for to this day. Oakwhisker had been involved in the skirmish as well, but was thankfully sporting nothing worse than a few injuries.
- Whitefoot publicly called Sablepaw out for his incompetence - and he made no attempt to deny it. He apologized to the Clan, expressing the deep regret he felt for letting them down. It was Oakwhisker who spoke up and told him he has nothing to apologize for, and there wasn't a whole lot he could do; he saw the injuries himself, and they'd been serious enough that even if Sablepaw hadn't been so rattled by the experience, he'd likely have perished anyway.
- The next time Sablepaw went to have his medicine cat dream, he received his full name: Sableheart, for his heart deeply set within his Clan. It was just as well, too, as his mentor fell ill not too long afterward, and then finally perished by the time that Sableheart reached thirty-six moons.
- The announcement of his name made Whitefoot furious, and she yowled at him about how he didn't deserve it. Oakwhisker, picking up on the fact that his friend and, by all means, brother did not want to get involved in an argument, stood up for Sableheart instead, leading to Whitefoot furiously trudging off on her own.
- He and his sister haven't really spoken since except under necessity. Sableheart has continued his job as medicine cat, and even though he's fully promoted, he still has a lot to learn; this time, StarClan and experience are his guides. He misses Berryfoot for all her gentle, patient sternness that she regarded him with, and he speaks to her often in his dreams.
