" long-furred black she-cat with green eyes "
the daughter of iceclaw and heatherleaf, nightflower is an exceptional shadowclan cat. she is new to the ranks of shadowclan's warriors, but is a welcomed addition. nightflower is the only surviving kit of their second litter, foxkit was too frail and died before he could even gasp his first breath. petalpaw died shortly before their warrior assessment, leaving nightflower as the sole child remaining. sunstorm and badgerface were already adult warriors by the time nightflower was even an apprentice, and had created their own lives for themselves.
one would think because of the nature of her existence, she would be a lonely, wailing she-cat the entire time. her mother was murdered, with claws in her pelt before nightflower had even left the nursery. she and her sister petalpaw were too young to remember exactly what went on that fateful day.
much like her aunt despair had followed the young she-cat from the day she opened her eyes. she was no stranger to loss, but nightflower knows that tears will not revive fallen family members. nightflower instead gives her life to her clan, she dedicates her entire being to the well-being of shadowclan in hopes that her clan will prosper.
as an apprentice she looked up to her aunt and aspired to be just like rosestar. really, what shadowclan kit didn't want to be? as she got older nightflower certainly developed her own personality and aspirations. even if a small part of her remained that wanted to be just like rosestar, it certainly no longer dominated her.
the damage she had done to herself as an apprentice was long lasting. it is a depressing tale, really. nightflower wanted to keep the memory of her lost littermate alive, and all petalpaw wanted to be was just like rosestar. she obsessed with being perfect, because that is all rosestar was to her, a perfect shadowclan cat. nightflower feared if she was anything less than perfect it would cause a rift-- maybe starclan would rip her aunts nine lives and name away. maybe starclan would take her father or her brothers! these were all just irrational fears, but something she kept to herself.
she became anxious and depressed, but hid it very well. it was hard to try and be anything less than perfect, what with rosestar being the leader and her father a highly respected warrior. nightflower promised herself she would never give up, and even after she realized that being perfect was not doable she tried to stop beating herself up. nightflower never did give up, but learned how to be easy on herself as rosestar and iceclaw would have wanted. the only cat she truly confided in about these fears was poppyfire, a fellow apprentice who wanted to carry shadowclan to greatness one day. poppyflame was the one who made it easier, and helped her develop her own dreams and her own personality.
nightflower developed a indomitable spirit, a flame burned deep inside of her heart that kept her going. she continues to honor her family and their legacy, even going as far as to take the suffix -flower to honor her deceased mother and sister. it is hard not to give into the sadness, to not give into the dark clouds that hang over her mind, but she finds herself able to keep her head above the dark churning waters that threaten to drag her down. she is brutally honest, a tongue as sharp as blades, and because she lacks an abundance of optimism, it is hard for her to share her clanmates sentiments of happiness.
the world is cruel, nightflower knows this. nightflower also knows that the world can nurture warmth, much like a permanent green-leaf.
nightflower one day wants to take up her aunts position, to become the leader of shadowclan. she wants to be there for her clanmates, and she believes that the ultimate sacrifice for ones clan is to either die for them- or live to become the next leader. she does not want to be a forceful leader, she wants to be one that leads out of compassion and kindness for her clanmates, much like rosestar. she wants to be a strong warrior, one that their clanmates can go to when they are lost or scared, much like iceclaw.
maybe one day nightflower wants to become a mother, to nurture her own litter of kits much like heatherleaf had. she believes this to be far off into the future, and even with poppyfire by her side, she has her eyes set on being there for her clan first. nightflower belongs out in the forest hunting, out on the battlefield. not sitting in the nursery with kits suckling at her belly.
she knows now that there is a time and a place to mourn. she mourns for her mother, for her sister, for the clanmates she loved but had left her behind. nightflower wants to leave a strong legacy, one that is told for generations to come before she can meet those clanmates, and that is ok.
